Research contract in red algal biochemistry. Red algae (Rhodophyceae) are multicellular macroalgae belonging to the eukaryotic supergroup Archaeplastida. This project aims to deepen our understanding of the molecular processes that govern the formation of the red algal cuticle. The candidate will use biochemical and structural methodologies to understand the protein constituents of the red algae cuticle and how they vary according to species and developmental stage. The identification of candidate genes involved in cuticle biosynthetic pathways from genomic data will enable the identification of potential targets for functional characterisation using CRISPR-Cas9 approaches.

The project will involve the maintenance and growth of Chondrus crispus cultures and, occasionally, other red algae. Molecular characterisation will use a range of different approaches, including cell biology, transmission electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. Protocols are available in the host laboratory for all these approaches.

Host institution: The Roscoff Biological Station (SBR) is a marine biology and oceanography research centre (http://www.sb-roscoff.fr/about-roscoff-marine-station/missions.html). It is located in the town of Roscoff on the coast of northern Brittany, approximately 60 km north-east of Brest. The SBR employs around 200 people on a permanent basis.
