Department of Physical Geography is one of the major departments within the Faculty of Science. The department has approximately 110 employees and educates approximately 1 000 students annually. Our research and education is in Physical Geography, a wide-ranging scientific field dealing with the diverse physical and biological features of Earth, their characteristics, processes, patterns and interactions with humans. We study connected physical, chemical, biological, geological, environmental and social processes and changes in the world's land areas and their water, ice and geological formations, climate systems and ecosystems, in relation to each other and to human societies. Physical Geography.

Subject description

The subject includes studies and applications in landscape development, soil science, geomorphology, earth observations of physical geographical processes.

Main responsibilities

Research, teaching and supervision. Teaching will mainly take place in undergraduate programmes in physical geography and earth sciences. The teaching consists partly of field teaching and leading excursions in physical geography.

Qualification requirements

In order to qualify for the position as associate professor, the applicant must have demonstrated good teaching skills and have a doctoral degree, or equivalent research expertise, of relevance to the subject area and the main responsibilities of the position.

The successful candidate must be able to express themselves well in spoken and written Swedish and English from the start.

All teaching positions at Stockholm University require the ability to collaborate and the general ability and suitability to perform one’s duties.

Teaching and learning in higher education

Completed training in teaching and learning in higher education, or equivalent knowledge, is an advantage. An applicant who has not completed at least 15 credits of teaching and learning in higher education and is not considered to have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge should undergo such training within the first two years of employment.

Assessment criteria

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to pedagogical skills, including the management and planning of training programmes, including didactic methods for distance learning.

Great importance is also attached to the degree of scientific excellence. Scientific expertise will primarily be assessed within the subject area of the position.

The following will also be considered:

  • Proven experience in teaching and supervision in geomatics.
  • Documented experience of course development in distance learning.
  • Documented experience of field teaching in the subject in Scandinavia.
  • Experience in educational administration at different levels.

Additional information

* Swedish “universitetslektor”; tenured position approximately equivalent to Senior Lecturer (UK) or Associate Professor (US).
