Carbonates are nearly everywhere in our environment, in coral reefs, in shells and limestone. They are a solid version of carbon dioxide. Surface chemistry on carbonates is still an largely unknown. LCS is an expert laboratory for the surface of solids but carbonates remain a difficult subject because of their low surface and their sensitivity to heat and to the necessary thermal treatments. A new family of carbonates with very high surface can host a great quantity of adsorbed species and will be studied with infrared spectroscopy to understand chemistry and natural processes happening on the surface of carbonates in many different domains. Carbonates are now intensively studied for trapping CO2 in industrial exhausts, for storing CO2 or for its recycling in the chemical industry. Low temperature plasma, a new tool for chemistry, will be used for treating and cleaning carbonates in our spectroscopic studies. Interaction between surface and plasma will be analyzed for understanding the behavior of solids in electric fields, and industrial application in storage or recycling of CO2 will be proposed.
