Offer Description
A main concern in the application of novel zinc coated advanced high strength steels is the weldability, in particular the phenomenon of liquid metal embrittlement (LME). LME may occur during welding when liquid zinc is in contact with solid steel, penetrating grain boundaries, forming cracks and thereby reducing macroscopic mechanical performance. The complex phenomenon is affected by local chemistry at the grain boundary, the characteristics of the microstructure at elevated temperature, but also the introduced stress state and strain rates.
This project provides the construction of a mesoscale modelling framework to assess the initiation and propagation of cracks under conditions prevailing during welding of zinc coated AHSS, contributing to obtain defect free welded structures. The Postdoc will be stationed at the department of Materials Science and Engineering within the faculty of Mechanical Engineering at TUDeft under the supervision of Dr.ir. C. Bos and Dr.ir. M.J.M. Hermans. The industrial partner in this project is Tata Steel Europe.
Where to apply
Requirements
Given the limited time of this project and the given task of the construction of the mesoscale modelling framework hands-on experience is required in:
- Steel physical metallurgy.
- Steel welding (nice-to-have).
- Development, implementation and application of phase field models for the liquid to solid phase transition (need-to-have).
- Development, implementation and application of cellular automata models for the liquid to solid phase transition (need-to-have).
- Experience in finite-element modelling of welding processes (temperature and deformation fields) (need-to-have).
Additional Information
Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. The TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, discounts on health insurance, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged.
For international applicants, TU Delft has the Coming to Delft Service. This service provides information for new international employees to help you prepare the relocation and to settle in the Netherlands. The Coming to Delft Service offers a Dual Career Programme for partners and they organise events to expand your (social) network.
A pre-employment screening can be part of the selection procedure.
