Biomolecular condensates, dynamic assemblies and key players in cell organization
Cells contain millions of biomolecules that interact to perform essential functions such as
functions such as energy production and waste recycling. A key question is
how these molecules come together at the right time and in the right place to perform these
processes. Biomolecular condensates, dynamic micrometric assemblies, are central to cellular
central to cellular organization. Recent experiments have shown that phase transitions
could explain how biomolecules can condense into dynamic assemblies.
assemblies. Examples as diverse as the formation of viral factories and stress granules, as well as
as neuronal synapses, are increasingly seen to be regulated by phase transitions.
phase transitions. Despite major advances, their quantitative study remains limited. Biomolecular
condensates are complex objects, and their biochemical composition and dynamics remain
poorly understood. The development of new analysis and manipulation tools is therefore essential to better understand their cellular role.
