Unemployment insurance

Description

Citizens of third countries who derive income or are employed under an employment contract in Romania, benefit from insured status, under the current law, and they also have the right to unemployment benefit.

Unemployed citizens must meet the following conditions to qualify for unemployment benefits:

  • To have contributed at least 12 months (by the time the application is submitted), in the last 2 years
  • Not to make more income than the minimum gross salary in the country
  • Not to meet requirements for retirement
  • To be registered in the employment agencies’ database for the town in which they have their domicile or residence

The amount offered as unemployment allowance starts at 75% of the gross minimum wage in the economy, and the period in which it is granted varies between 6 to 12 months.

Further information on this topic can be found on the official website of the National Agency for Employment or by reading Law no. 76/2002.
