OFFER DESCRIPTION
We would like to encourage applications from candidates worldwide wishing to pursue a PhD degree in the field of Health-related sciences, with interest in the research areas related to: preterm infant, neuroimaging, neurodevelopment, outcome prediction, brain injury.
FGIBICA/FCadiz in Cádiz, Spain, is offering a PhD Fellowship for 1 early-stage researcher (ESR), starting between 01.09.2021 and 01.11.2021.
The selected candidates will be enrolled in the Doctoral School of University of Cádiz with the option of being awarded a PhD Degree in Health-related sciences.
The ESR will be hosted at the University Hospital Puerta del Mar in Cádiz, Spain
The position is posted as part of the exciting PARENT project, PremAtuRe nEwborn motor and cogNitive impairmenTs: Early diagnosis (PARENT), funded by the European Union through the Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme under Grant number 956394.
Information on the PARENT project can be found at
https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/956394/it
The PARENT consortium comprises universities with researchers who are leading experts on motor and cognitive impairment diagnosis and treatment, medical diagnostics, clinical data digitalization, machine learning, mechanistic modelling, molecular and multiscale modelling, information and communication technologies.
The successful candidate will join an international network of 15 PhD Fellows (ESRs) to become part of the next generation of specialists able to challenge the traditional way of neurodevelopmental disease follow-ups, by adding to classical approaches methods and technologies such as multiscale and multiphysics modelling, artificial intelligence, hybrid neuroimaging technologies, automatized eye tracking for newborn. All of those technologies can be integrated in a last frontier of a modular intelligent decision support system built on cardinal principles such as Patient-Centred Design and Evidence-based and Personalized Medicine. Therefore, besides training ESRs on premature child related to neuro-diagnostic technologies, clinics, modelling, computer science and data management, PARENT emphasizes aspects related to ethics, privacy, and security which will be an integral part of the network's training program.
The position will offer you an excellent background, working within a strong, cross-disciplinary network among leading Universities and research institutions across Europe and with contacts to industry, governmental- and non-governmental institutions.
PARENT ESR 3
Topic: Preterm Children neurodevelopmental trajectory: clinical study focused on neuroimaging and electric signals.
Description: The PhD will focus on the study of the specific neuroimaging markers that predict neurodevelopmental outcome in the preterm infant. Brain maturation will be studied as reflected by brain structure and microstructure as well as the contribution of clinical conditions to a different pattern of brain growth. Furthermore, neurophysiological parameters will be explored related to brain maturation and brain injury and determine their contribution together with neuroimaging markers and clinical factors in the prediction of neurodevelopmental outcome in the preterm infant. Moreover, research will be perfomed on neurophysiological trends related to sleep-wake cycles maturation during NICU admission to determine their contribution to overall neurological assessment in the acute settings and in the long-term neurodevelopmental outcome. Research will also determine the feasibility of performing eye track tests at 6 to 10 months of age during follow-up after NICU admission of preterm infants and study the association of eye track findings with later cognitive and motor outcomes at 18-24months of age.
Supervisors: Prof. Isabel Benavente-Fernández, Prof. Yolanda Sánchez-Sandoval. University of Cádiz.
Secondment Periods: The ESR 3 project includes secondment periods to other beneficiaries and external partners of the PARENT Project (more information, will be given during the oral interview).
