Position Summary
The APC Microbiome Institute (APC) was formed in 2003 with funding from Science Foundation Ireland and in conjunction with key industry partners. It represents a seamless collaboration between UCC, Teagasc, Moorepark and CIT. It is widely recognised that our microbiome (community of bacteria/viruses and fungi that live in and on our bodies) plays an important role in human health and has become one of the most dynamic, complex and exciting areas of research in both food and pharmaceutical arenas. Over the last decade the APC has established itself as one of the leading global centres in gut microbiota research. The APC has made several landmark discoveries and has published over 2,500 research articles in peer-reviewed journals, generating many journal covers and associated editorials. The APC comprises over 300 individuals, from the scientific PI’s (the APC Faculty) funded by the partner Institutions, the management team, and a dedicated group of research scientists, research assistants and postgraduate’s students.
The O’Toole laboratory in the APC has a long-standing interest in analyzing the gut microbiome in the context of promoting human health. To further that aim, we now seek to recruit a Research Support Officer to occupy a senior role in the lab’s bioinformatics group. The appointee will have demonstrable high-level experience in the application of cut-edge bioinformatic analysis to gut microbial communities. They will have published achievements in 16S analysis, metagenomics, diet-microbiome analysis and multivariate statistics. They will have used machine learning to identify microbiome features that associate with metadata features. They will have coding and operational experience in several languages including Perl, Python and R. They will be able to design and monitor microbiome cross-sectional studies. Excellent speaking and report presentation skills are required, and ability to perform team-work in a multi-disciplinary environment.
