Offer Description

We invite applications for a fully funded PhD position focused on the sustainable fabrication of high-performance bioelectrodes from seafood and aquaculture waste. The core aim of this research is to optimize hydrothermal processing conditions to convert seafood waste—primarily chitin-rich biomass—into carbon-rich materials suitable for energy storage applications. The successful candidate will contribute to the transformation of these biomaterials into chitosan with active functional groups (e.g., hydroxyl and amino groups), enhancing their interaction with conductive additives and ultimately their performance as bio-based electrodes

Skills/Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Electrochemistry, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience or strong interest in biomass valorisation, hydrothermal processing, or electrochemical energy storage systems.
  • Familiarity with analytical techniques for material characterization and electrochemical analysis.
  • Strong motivation for interdisciplinary, sustainability-oriented research.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work across institutions and disciplines.
Specific Requirements
  • Apply hydrothermal techniques to partially deacetylate chitin from seafood waste, converting it into chitosan while preserving and enhancing functional group activity.
  • Optimize process parameters to ensure a solid carbon yield that meets or exceeds a 70% carbon threshold.
  • Fabricate and characterize bioelectrodes derived from the valorised materials.
  • Assess the electrochemical performance of the electrodes using techniques including:
  • Collaborate closely with project partners and participate in dissemination activities including publications, conferences, and workshops.

Interested candidates should submit the following documents in a single PDF file:

  • A cover letter detailing research interests and motivation.
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV).
  • Academic transcripts (Bachelor’s and Master’s).
  • Contact details for two academic referees.
