CICA - Centro Interdisciplinar de Química e Bioloxía, A Coruña, Spain

One PhD position is available in the framework of the project “Design of new niosome-based gene delivery systems for effective transfection of mesenchymal stem cells (NIO-STEM)” [CNS2024-154660]. The research, supported by the Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (Consolidación Investigadora 2024), will be conducted at the CICA – Centro Interdisciplinar de Química e Bioloxía (https://cica.udc.es) in A Coruña (Spain).

Description:

The research involves the development of niosome-based nanosystems to improve gene transfer in mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and enhance their differentiation into hyaline cartilage phenotype. The researcher will work on preparing controlled gene and drug release systems, as well as implementing vector design to promote internalization, intracellular trafficking, and chondrogenesis of MSCs.

Specifications:

· Two-year PhD contract, with a possible extension, starting preferably in September 2025.

· The researcher will be part of a multidisciplinary research project by joining the Gene and Cell Therapy (G-CEL; https://cica.udc.gal/group/g-cel) and Bioinspired Nanochemistry (BioNanoChem; (https://bionanochemlab.com) research groups.

· The investigator will join a young and dynamic team in a stimulating environment, where teamwork and scientific innovation are key.

· The work will be carried out under the joint supervision of Dr. Ana Rey Rico and Dr. Roberto J. Brea.

Requirements:

· Applicants must hold a BSc degree in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Chemistry and Biology (Dual Degree), Biotechnology, Chemistry, Biology, or related discipline.

· MSc degree or equivalent that provides access to enrollment in a PhD program.

· Experience in the fields of synthetic and supramolecular chemistry, cell biology, and gene/drug delivery is highly desirable.

· Candidates are expected to have interest in multidisciplinary work and motivation to learn from a variety of scientific areas.

· Good interpersonal skills, as well as written/oral communication skills in English.

· Academic grade point average (GPA) that qualifies for national or regional fellowships will be considered.
