LABORATORYOxidative Stress and Cell Cycle
Our group is ultimately interested in deciphering the mechanisms that control cell cycle
progression and, specifically, the regulatory events controlling the G1-to-S transition of
the cell cycle in mitosis and meiosis. The candidate will characterize the regulation of
the yeast MBF complex, which is the functional homolog of human RB-E2F, through
alternative CDKs. The exact knowledge of how the MBF complex is activated or
repressed will help to understand not only the regulation of the G1-to-S transition in
fission yeast, but also will help to improve our knowledge and understanding of the
“restriction point” in mammalian cells. We plan to tackle this project from different
approximations, including the use of some genetically-encoded fluorescent reporters to
measure cell cycle progression that have developed in our lab.
As a consequence of developing a multidisciplinary project, a solid background in
Genetics, Cell Biology and Molecular Biology is a requirement to carry out this project;
previous work with yeast and/or cell cycle is not required, but will be a plus. Our group
and the Department will also be involved in the candidate’s career development.
