Offer Description
The IEMN is a joint research unit of the CNRS, the University of Lille, the Université Polytechnique Hauts-de-France, Centrale Lille and ISEN JUNIA. Its device design, manufacturing and characterization facilities are among the best in Europe. The Institute employs nearly 500 people (professors, researchers, engineers, administrative staff and doctoral students). The IEMN's main activities are focused on micro and nanotechnologies for applications in health, transport, communication and information.
The candidate will be hosted by the TELICE research group (Telecommunications, Interference, and Electromagnetic Compatibility). The research activities carried out by the TELICE group focus mainly on the reliability and connectivity of communications in transport systems in relation to societal and industrial needs. One of the main studied themes relates to the optimization of the PHY 5G layer for vehicular communications.
Vehicular communication networks are booming, thanks to applications such as autonomous driving and vehicle convoy management. These systems are becoming essential to meet the growing need for safety, driving comfort and energy efficiency in the face of urbanization. However, communication between vehicles and infrastructure poses challenges, particularly in terms of reliability, latency, security and interoperability. 5G networks and beyond aim to meet these requirements, with extended coverage and increased capacity, by integrating disruptive technologies such as the “cell-free” concept.
This concept differs from traditional cellular networks by removing cell boundaries to reduce interference and frequent handovers in highly mobile situations. In this context, a dense network of access points (APs) connected to a computing center covers a wide area, offering better connectivity thanks to the deployment of massive, distributed access points (massive MIMO). This approach enables more uniform coverage, better connectivity, and reduced operational and energy costs for operators. However, the development of these systems requires realistic modeling of their propagation channels.
The candidate will contribute with a comprehensive theoretical and experimental literature review on cell-free massive MIMO wireless networks. To date, there is no experimental sounding technique that would allow such a measurement. However, a new technological approach based on the MaMIMOSA channel sounder is being developed in-house to be operational in 2026. As such, the candidate will contribute to the implementation of experimental multi-user sounding measurements of cell-free massive MIMO wireless networks under mobile conditions, the exploitation of data generated by the sounder and the characterization of the propagation channel. The person recruited will work with researchers from the IEMN TELICE team to write the associated characterization reports, as well as participating in the writing of articles for international conferences and peer-reviewed journals. In addition, the multi-user aspect of these measurements opens the door to the development and evaluation of resource allocation methods in connection with quality of service (QoS), which will constitute another original aspect of the thesis.
