About the opportunity
The Faculty of Medicine and Health is the largest faculty at the University of Sydney, and contains seven academic schools, including the School of Medical Sciences and the Sydney Medical School. We are seeking to appoint an outstanding senior academic as the Bosch Chair of Infectious Diseases (Professor/Level E) in teaching and research. Depending on the candidate the role may be appointed in the School of Medical Sciences or the Sydney Medical School. This position is suited to an ambitious person with a passion for building a program of work in infectious diseases. The Chair will have an internationally outstanding research program which will complement and leverage the research activities in the school and faculty. We are looking for a scientific leader who is capable of fostering connections with a wide network of academic, industry and professional institutions, partners, and stakeholders.
The Chair must have a disciplined approach to research, either in basic or applied science and or even have a slant towards a translational research program that has commercial milestones. The Chair will be required to mentor and develop the career aspirations of students and academic staff. In addition to their research program, they will actively contribute to teaching, in particular supervision of students and where appropriate provide teaching to undergraduate and or postgraduate students. The Chair will report to the relevant Head of School.
About you (skills, capabilities and experience)
The successful candidate will:
− hold a PhD in a relevant discipline and an international reputation for outstanding scholarship and research
− demonstrate experience in people leadership and management of a research team within the higher education sector
− have experience supervising and mentoring of higher degree by research students to completion
− have an outstanding track record in obtaining grant funding and an exceptional publication record with original contributions in the field of infectious diseases
− have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and proven ability and experience in working cooperatively and collegially in inclusive decision-making environments.
− may have experience in educational design and delivery, including recognition for achieving improved or consistently excellent student outcomes

Term and remuneration
The successful candidate will be offered a 5-year fixed term position on a full-time basis, with the possibility for renewal subject to performance and funding. The successful candidate will be offered an attractive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate's relevant experience and qualifications.
