Offer Description
Applications are invited for a PhD position in Chemistry at the University of Iceland under the supervision of Prof. Krishna K. Damodaran. Project is developing organo-rhodium(I) compounds based on amino acids as anticancer agents. The project is funded by the Icelandic Research Foundation, Rannís, which is in the field of bioinorganic chemistry.
Main tasks
Platinum based drugs have been important in the treatment of cancer for decades, but these compounds displayed side effects making it difficult to distinguish their toxicity towards cancer cells from cytotoxicity. We have shown that organo-tin compounds based on phosphinoyldithioformate ligand are excellent anticancer agents (Dalton Trans., 2022, 51, 13119-13128). The successful candidate will synthesis and characterize various phosphinoyldithioformate based on amino acids and the corresponding rhodium complexes. The candidate will screen the anticancer activities of the complexes at the Biomedical Centre and analyze the mode of action. The candidate should be able to switch between inorganic and biology labs due to the interdisciplinary nature of the project. In addition, the candidate will have an opportunity to get hands-on experience in X-ray crystallography, which will enable the candidate to utilize this expertise in associated research areas.
