Offer Description

The neutrino team at the Subatech research laboratory in Nantes is proposing a research project in multi-messenger astronomy, focusing on the study of transient phenomena such as fast radio bursts (FRBs), potentially associated with the emission of high-energy neutrinos.
This research is supported by neutrino telescopes such as KM3NeT, comprising two detectors: ORCA (low-energy) and ARCA (high-energy).

Since 2022, another thesis within the group has been devoted to the search for neutrinos coincident with FRBs, leading to methodological analyses and initial limits on detectable fluxes.
Further statistical analysis of over 900 FRBs is planned.

The new thesis project will continue this work by refining the analyses, differentiating FRB subpopulations (repeaters or not, galactic or extragalactic) and neutrino event types.
The aim will be to adapt and improve existing tools for a detector that has become more sensitive, and for expanding catalogs of sources.

Expected results include:

  • a better understanding of FRB radio and neutrino emission patterns
  • updated analyses with more sources and data
tools for monitoring future detector growth
  • the establishment of flux limits or, ideally, the first detection of a radio-neutrino association
  • a contribution to multi-messenger alerts and monitoring

Benefits

Nantes Université is a recognized institution and a major research center in Western France. With 42 000 students and 3 200 lecturers and researchers, Nantes Université seeks to meet today's major challenges. Located near the Atlantic coast and 2 hours from Paris by train, Nantes is a large city regularly ranked for its quality of life and well-known for its cultural scene.

PhD students in physics, chemistry and geosciences receive training in internationally recognized laboratories associated with the CNRS. They also benefit from a wage of €2 200 gross per month. Within the Graduate School 3MG, students are able to attend courses dedicated to research and innovation and take part in events and meetings in France or abroad to develop their professional network.

Selection process

Candidates will have to submit the following documents:

  • Detailed and updated CV
  • Cover letter
  • Transcripts of the grades and rankings of the Master’s degree or engineering degree (for semesters for which grades are available)
  • Letter of appreciation from the direct supervisor of the Master’s research internship (mandatory for the 2nd year of the Master's degree, if applicable for the 1st year)

Pre-selected candidates will be contacted directly for an interview with a committee composed of at least the thesis director and a representative of the Graduate School.
