Offer Description
The person recruited will work on the plasma-assisted synthesis of NH3 in the framework of the project called PLASMA-N-ACT.
Ammonia (NH3) is the primary ingredient in fertilizers, and also widely used for the production of base chemicals. It is also an H2 carrier thanks to its high energy density of 5.2 kWh kg-1 and high hydrogen gravimetric content of 17.6 wt.%. NH3 today is almost exclusively (>96%) produced by the Haber-Bosch (H-B) process which is high energy consuming due to severe operating conditions, i.e. T>500°C and P>150 bars. In PLASMA-N-ACT project, nitrogen activation will be done using external energy sources such as non-thermal plasmas to facilitate the cleavage of the strong N≡N bond, thus achieving NH3 synthesis under mild conditions.
The PhD student will perform FTIR Operando studies of the plasma-assisted catalytic synthesis of NH3 in order to determine the kinetics for plasma assisted-ammonia catalytic synthesis with promising materials. Such Plasma-FTIR systems are already available and developed at LCS.

People selected for an interview will be directly contacted by e-mail in APRIL - MAY 2025 .
The research will be carried out at the Laboratoire Catalyse et Spectrochimie (LCS).
The LCS laboratory is a joint research unit under the auspices of the CNRS (UMR 6506), the University of Caen Normandy and ENSICAEN, the host institution. The LCS is recognized for its research activities, which are organized into two teams: one working on the rational design of porous zeolitic materials for targeted applications (catalysis, adsorption, sensors, medical applications…), and the other focusing on in-situ and operando spectroscopic methods for molecular-scale understanding of catalytic and adsorption phenomena. The person recruited will be inserted in
this latter team. The LCS is heavily involved in major energy and pollution abatement projects and has long-standing strong interactions with numerous industrial groups.
The laboratory employs over 80 people, including 32 permanent staff (19 researchers, 14 administrative and technical staff). One of the laboratory's strengths also lies in the state-of-the art equipment, original tools and skills developed within its 5 technical platforms (Synthesis; Adsorption Catalysis; NMR; Vibrational Spectroscopy).
This post is located in a sector covered by the protection of scientific and technical potential (PPST) and therefore requires, in accordance with the regulations, that your arrival be authorised by the competent authority of the Minister for Higher Education, Research and Innovation (MESRI).
